What Are the Different Types of Solar Systems?

Choosing the right solar system comes down to how much energy independence you’re chasing, where you live, and how you use power day-to-day. At AusPac Solar, we offer a range of systems tailored to suit everything from city homes to remote cattle stations. Here's a breakdown of the main types of solar systems we offer, and how they each work.

Grid Connect

Grid Connect systems are ideal for households or businesses connected to the mains electricity grid. During the day, your solar panels generate electricity that powers your home or business. If you produce more than you use, the excess gets fed back into the grid — earning you credits on your power bill through a feed-in tariff. At night or during bad weather, you simply draw power from the grid. It’s a great way to cut down on energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint, though it won’t provide backup power during a blackout.

Hybrid Connect

A Hybrid Connect system gives you the benefits of both solar and battery storage, while still staying connected to the grid. It stores excess solar power during the day so you can use it in the evening or during peak times. If your battery’s full, any extra power goes back to the grid. And if you run out of stored power, the grid’s there as a backup. Hybrid systems are ideal if you want more control over your energy usage and protection against rising electricity prices — plus they can offer some power security during outages, depending on your setup. If there is a power outage the whole house will not be protected, only one section of the house can be, i.e. the fridge. Speak to us about how this can be set up.

Semi Off-Grid

Semi Off-Grid systems are perfect for those who want to use their own solar energy first, but still have the grid there as a safety net. These systems prioritise solar and battery power, only tapping into the grid when absolutely necessary — like during extended cloudy periods or if your battery runs low. This setup suits rural and regional properties where the grid might be unreliable, or anyone looking to take greater control of their power usage without going fully off-grid. You get the best of both worlds: energy independence and reliable backup.

Off-Grid

Off-Grid systems are built for total energy independence. These are ideal for properties where connecting to the grid is too costly or simply not an option — think remote farms, cabins, or bush blocks. Your entire power needs are met through solar panels, battery storage, and usually a backup generator. These systems are custom-designed based on your usage, and they need to be sized correctly to get you through cloudy spells and high-demand periods. If you’re ready to unplug from the grid entirely, this is the setup for you.

Portable Off-Grid

Portable Off-Grid systems are compact, mobile solar units perfect for camping, 4WD trips, fishing, or running tools on-site. They combine solar, battery, and inverter tech into a single unit that you can take with you wherever you go. While they’re not designed to power an entire house, they’re brilliant for charging devices, running small appliances, or keeping lights on when you’re off the beaten track. These are also a handy backup option for tradies or outdoor events where grid power isn’t available. At AusPac Solar we sell a wide range of Portable Solar units online here.
